After buying Dishwasher detergent month after month I got so sick of spending the money!  Especially with lots of little hands which means LOTS of dishes to do!  I found this great DIY Dishwasher Detergent recipe from JustLaine  and LOVE it!  I’ve been using it for over a year with no problems!

DIY Dishwasher Detergent

  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 cups Borax
  • 2 cups Baking Soda
  • 4 packets of Kool Aid (the off brand works too, you just want to look to make sure “citric acid” is included in the ingredients.

Mix all together.

Use about 1 tablespoon per load.

It’s so nice to not have to spend extra money on Dishwasher Detergent!

After using home made detergent for a few months I got lazy and didn’t make it.  I didn’t realize how expensive it was  when I went to buy it!  I haven’t made that mistake again.

I’m sticking with the cheaper home made stuff so I can spend my money for fun things.

Things I have learned:

  1. Put this detergent right before you start the dishwasher. If you put it in too early sits too long it gets too wet and won’t come out well in the cycle.
  2. Fogging in my glasses: No, if have not noticed this happening. Although I DO have foggy kitchen glasses. My glasses were foggy long before I started using homemade detergent. YES this means that all the different type of store brands I bought still turned them foggy.
  3. I pour in white distilled vinegar into my “rinse liquid” spot and notice some of a difference with my dishes coming out more dry.

Thank you JustLaine for coming up with a DIY Dishwasher Detergent recipe!
