4 Questions to ask before setting up a budget

  1. Am I fully committed to trying to make a budget work for me? Making a decision to create and start a budget is a big decision.  Once you are committed, you already have that on your side.  I you don’t make the decision to go for it 100% it won’t work.  That brings up the second question…
  2. Is my spouse/significant other/family committed to helping me make this work? Again, if your other half isn’t willing to try and make it work, then it will be very difficult.  They don’t have to be 100% involved, but they should be aware of the categories, and guidelines.  They should also be able to give some input on what they do or don’t like.
  3. How responsible am I with money? Being honest with yourself is important.  No one gets their budget goals 100%.  If you are a spender then reaching 80% of your goals might be the best you can do the first few months.
  4. Am I a spender or a saver? Knowing whether you like to save or spend money changes up your budget a big.  Savers tend to put more money into savings then they can probably handle… thus making them go over each month.  Spenders tend to spend TOO much and not put enough into savings.  Think about what you are, and adjust your budget accordingly.

Once you have made the commitment, and have your spouse on board, it’s time to get started!  Remember to keep in the back of your head your relationship with money, then grab a pen and paper and head on over to 4 East Steps to Create to get started improving your finances!
